The California Delta Water Education program is an opportunity to educate students on: the history of the Delta; the geography of the Delta within the California water system; what a watershed is; perform water quality testing; sample and inspect species and understand their role in the food chain; learn about native and non-native species and plants; and learn about the human impact on the environment (pollution, trash, etc). Each activity station teaches the students the value and importance of the environment.
The uniqueness of this program is the ability to have on the water classrooms out on the Delta providing local students an opportunity to experience the Delta since many students have never seen or been to this body of water. The program meets 4th grade state curriculum guidelines. Local high school and college students have been used as assistants and mentors with the scientists and teachers at the various activity stations. The experience is enjoyed and a good learning tool’s for these older students as well as it has been observed that younger students enjoy working and learning from these individuals. Prior to each voyage teacher’s are given classroom materials & student workbooks.
Many of the classrooms cannot afford these on the water classrooms. Your support of these programs will help to educate our children for tomorrow. Additional funding is needed for these programs to continue.
